The authors examine the problem of the differential diagnosis of spontaneous hematoma of the abdominal rectus muscles versus "surgical" or "non-surgical" acute abdomen and other conditions. The clinical characteristics and investigative methods used are reviewed with a view to avoiding diagnostic errors. In addition, the authors discuss 6 clinical cases which they have observed personally.
