Highly symmetrical arrangements of the lanthanide metals Ln including the S -symmetrical chair conformations of the [Sm(CN)] ring in 1 or an icosahedron as in 2 (see picture) are found in novel multinuclear cyclopentadienyl complexes. The formation of different structural motifs is directed by ionic bonding criteria such as the nature of the bridging heteroligands and the Cp/Ln ratio.
