The first persistent platinum(I)-centered radical was generated by homolytic cleavage of a Pt-HgSiR bond of a mercury-substituted platinum(II) complex. The Pt radical was characterized by EPR spectroscopy, chemical trapping experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
