Cynthia M. Thomas, EdD, RN, is an associate professor in the School of Nursing at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She teaches across three programs, prelicensure undergraduate nursing program, RN to BSN, and master's program. Roberta Allen, BSN, RN, is an instructor in the School of Nursing at Ball State University. She teaches a management and leadership course and psychiatric nursing. Jane Edwards, BSN, RN, is an instructor in the School of Nursing at Ball State University. She teaches prenursing preparation and the management and leadership course.

Abstract

Being a preceptor for a new nurse or a student is a great way to promote the future of nursing. However, most nurses have not been taught how to be an effective preceptor. Eight strategies for effective precepting are presented. Servant leadership is discussed as a theoretical basis for serving as a preceptor.
