Literature is controversial in regard with alterations in pharyngeal airway dimensions subsequent to maxillary protraction. The correlation between maxillary protraction and sagittal airway dimension was investigated in association with tongue and soft palate position in skeletal Class III children. The results were compared with those of an untreated Class III and a Class I malocclusion control group.
In this cross-sectional study pre- and post-treatment cephalometric radiographs of 19 Class III patients (6 males, 13 females; mean age, 7.93 ± 0.96 years) treated with facemask were analyzed. The correlation between treatment changes in craniofacial morphology and those in the upper airway, tongue, and soft palate was evaluated. These results were compared with those of a group of 16 Class I malocclusion patients (1 male, 15 females; mean age, 7.31 ± 0.7 years) and a group of 15 untreated Class III patients (4 males and 11 females; mean age, 7.46 ± 0.1 years). A paired -test, the Shapiro-Wilk test and Mann-Whitney U-test was used. The level of significance was established as < 0.05.
Nasopharyngeal airway measurements PNS-ad1 and PNS-ad2 significantly increased by 2 mm and 2.1 mm, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed that maxillary protraction had a positive relationship with PNS-ad1 and PNS-ad2.
Nasopharyngeal airway dimensions can be improved in the short term with maxillary protraction in skeletal Class III children.
关于上颌前牵引后咽气道尺寸的改变,文献中存在争议。本研究探讨了骨性III类错颌儿童上颌前牵引与矢状面气道尺寸之间的相关性,并结合舌和软腭位置进行分析。将结果与未经治疗的III类错颌组和I类错颌对照组进行比较。
本横断面研究分析了19例接受面罩治疗的III类患者(6例男性,13例女性;平均年龄7.93±0.96岁)治疗前后的头影测量X线片。评估颅面形态变化与上气道、舌及软腭变化之间的相关性。将这些结果与16例I类错颌患者(1例男性,15例女性;平均年龄7.31±0.7岁)和15例未经治疗的III类患者(4例男性,11例女性;平均年龄7.46±0.1岁)的结果进行比较。采用配对t检验、Shapiro-Wilk检验和Mann-Whitney U检验。显著性水平设定为P<0.05。
鼻咽气道测量值PNS-ad1和PNS-ad2分别显著增加2mm和2.1mm。统计分析显示上颌前牵引与PNS-ad1和PNS-ad2呈正相关。
骨性III类儿童上颌前牵引可在短期内改善鼻咽气道尺寸。
