The orthodontic considerations in orthognathic cases are based on a detailed understanding of the malocclusion, particularly a differential diagnosis of its facial, skeletal, and dental components, along with a recognition of the limitations of current orthodontic therapy. The goal is to develop a treatment plan that produces the optimal in esthetics, function, and stability while addressing the patient's chief complaint. Attention must be paid to the need to integrate the orthodontic component of treatment with the general dental and surgical phases of the patient's care.
