Electronmicroscopic studies have been made on the distribution of the primary vestibular afferents after sectioning the VIIIth nerve in the frog Rana temporaria. The projections of the vestibular nerve fibers extend ipsilaterally. Some of the primary vestibular afferents are connected with the second-order neurons by means of electrotonic contacts. Degeneration of postsynaptic components was found in axo-axonal synapses. Some of the vestibular neurons send axons to the labyrinth. Possible functional significance of these findings is discussed.
