The aim of this article is to trace the historical development of Ernst Schmidt and his research school. Schmidt was an ideally director and teacher. The scientific programme is represented by two books, 197 papers and 117 dissertations. The scientific programme has two main roots: research of plants (phytochemical), especially alkaloids (63% of the publications) and chemical researches. Schmidt had 1200 students, 109 made their doctor-graduate under Schmidt and 14 are becoming professor. The research conditions in the pharmaceutical Institute Marburg were very good and the research school of Schmidt has an important public and social recognition still today.
