Controlled studies are essential in any evaluation of the effects of treatment in cases of sterility due to oligospermia because of the important inter-individual variations in the sperm count and in the spontaneous pregnancy rate. The various hormonal and non-hormonal treatments for idiopathic oligospermia are described with special emphasis on the results of double-blind studies. Future prospects for the treatment of male sterility by in vitro fertilisation are then discussed.
