This research aimed at evaluating the effects of the nociceptive trigeminal inhibition splint (NTIS) on electromyography (EMG) for masseter and temporalis muscles in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), and at detecting the discomfort degree originating from this splint.
The sample consisted of 15 patients having TMDs of muscular origin to be treated by NTIS. The activity degree of masseter and temporalis muscles was measured using the EMG two times: before the treatment and after 6 months. Besides, patients' discomfort was assessed after the start of treatment four times: 1 day, 2 weeks, 1 month, and 6 months.
After the treatment, there was a significant decrease in masseter and temporalis muscles' activity in both right and left sides ( < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in the electrical muscular activity mean change between the masseter muscles (-43.87 ± 26.82) and the temporalis muscles (-54.91 ± 21.16) ( = 0.082), or between the right muscles (-51.97 ± 26.30) and the left muscles (-46.81 ± 22.90) ( = 0.422). In addition, the discomfort degree gradually decreased after 2 weeks ( < 0.01).
The use of NTIS is associated with reduction in the masseter and temporalis muscles' activity. Also, the patients' discomfort degree from NTIS progressively decreases after 2 weeks of treatment.
The NTIS is an effective therapeutic approach for patients having TMDs of muscular origin.
本研究旨在评估伤害性三叉神经抑制夹板(NTIS)对颞下颌关节紊乱病(TMD)患者咬肌和颞肌肌电图(EMG)的影响,并检测该夹板引起的不适程度。
样本包括15例肌肉源性TMD患者,采用NTIS进行治疗。使用肌电图在治疗前和治疗6个月后两次测量咬肌和颞肌的活动程度。此外,在治疗开始后1天、2周、1个月和6个月四次评估患者的不适情况。
治疗后,左右两侧咬肌和颞肌的活动均显著降低(<0.001)。咬肌(-43.87±26.82)和颞肌(-54.91±21.16)之间的肌肉电活动平均变化无显著差异(=0.082),右侧肌肉(-51.97±26.30)和左侧肌肉(-46.81±22.90)之间也无显著差异(=0.422)。此外,2周后不适程度逐渐降低(<0.01)。
使用NTIS可降低咬肌和颞肌的活动。而且,治疗2周后患者因NTIS产生的不适程度逐渐降低。
NTIS是治疗肌肉源性TMD患者的一种有效治疗方法。
