Awareness of the potential benefits of autologous blood transfusion (ABT) has recently increased since the advent of AIDS. The risk of transmission of this and other diseases by blood transfusion in the UK is very small. Nevertheless, ABT can play a useful complementary role to the homologous blood supply.
