Movements of chick embryo fibroblasts seeded onto glass, which was partly covered with glutaraldehyde-fixed fibroblasts were photographed and analysed. It was observed that collisions of living fibroblasts with the fixed ones led to a contact inhibition of movement and influenced cell shape by limiting cell flattening.
