[]-Face π-expanded coumarins are synthesized by employing the Scholl cyclization method. These new arene-annulated dipolar coumarins display interesting absorption and fluorescent properties. The large Stokes shifts, tuneable fluorescent quantum yields, and high photostability reveal promise in bioimaging application.
