The objective of this article has been to review the practical aspects of parenteral feeding in the critical care setting. The general principles outlined in this chapter have evolved as a result of a 10-year experience with a busy nutrition support service in a tertiary teaching institution. We are hopeful that these practical guidelines, in part empirical and based on the major research advances in the field, will be of assistance to those involved in the nutritional care of critically ill patients.
