Mechanical sutures can be used in some appendicectomies for closure of the caecum or of the caeco-appendicular junction. This technique is indicated in cases of necrosis of the appendix extending to the lower end of the caecum and in patients with very wide caeco-appendicular junction. In such cases, it provides a simple and safe solution, with reduced risk of sepsis, to the problem of appendicular ligature.
