The increasing implementation of advanced imaging in the form of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica has had a significant impact on the diagnostic work-up of this disorder. This article summarizes the role of FDG-PET imaging in polymyalgia rheumatica with a specific focus on findings, sensitivity and specificity, diagnosis and follow-up, assessment of concurrent large vessel vasculitis, and differential diagnosis.
