A method is described for the separation of titanium, zirconium, iron, and aluminum from one another and for their subsequent determination. Iron is first precipitated with 1-nitroso-2-naphthol after complexing the titanium and zirconium with citrate to prevent their precipitation. Titanium and zirconium are then collectively precipitated with cupferron and subsequently separated from each other by precipitating the titanium with 8-hydroxyquinoline after complexing the zirconium with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Aluminum and zirconium are recovered from their respective solutions by precipitation with cupferron. The accuracy of the method was proved by analyzing synthetic solutions containing known amounts of the four elements.
