Abstract

A capillary structural unit can be given an unambiguous, topological definition which forms the basis for the practical stereological estimation of the total number of such units in a capillary network. This definition of a capillary is in accordance with the concept of formation of new capillars. The principle is illustrated by the (simple) example of glomerular tufts in the kidney.
