We demonstrate numerically and experimentally a gain-managed nonlinear amplifier with a large mode area fiber. The amplifier delivers 1.2 µJ and sub-40 fs pulses with the spectrum spanning from ∼1000 to ∼1180. We show that longitudinal gain-loss evolution plays an essential role in pulse formation by comparing simulations with different gain models to the experimental results.
