The above discussion summarizes our current treatment protocols at the University of South Alabama Burn Center. These are always undergoing evaluation and change. There are many materials currently available for treating the burn wound and even more new ones on the horizon. The efficacy of these materials is often unit dependent, and because of specific unit microbial flora may produce wonderful results at one center and poor results at another. Constant review of outcome is mandatory. The ideal skin substitute for all wounds and all clinical situations does not exist. The clinician must be thoroughly familiar with the properties of many products and be prepared to change from one material to another as the clinical situation dictates.
