The elderly patient may be significantly benefited by careful evaluation and treatment of lower extremity disease. A great deal of emphasis must be given to preoperative planning to assure the most predictable outcome of any treatment program. Arthritis about the major joints has been revolutionized joint replacement surgery and fracture treatment has undergone many changes in the elderly. Most elderly patients can undergo surgical intervention.
