Standardization of the organ procurement techniques, as initiated by Starzl, allows an equal protection of all thoraco-abdominal organs. Therefore in each donorcenter, every potential donor has to be considered as a multi-organ donor. In order to reduce the percentage of primary non-functioning grafts, specialized procurement teams should be formed and further research for adequate donor-assessment criteria is needed.
