Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries which is characterised by the formation of yellowish plaques of atheroma in the inner lining of the arteries. It chiefly affects the cerebral arteries, the coronary arteries and the arteries supplying the lower limb. This presentation will concentrate on the latter.
