A derivation of the change in electrical impedance of an NMR surface coil produced by inductive coupling with a conducting medium is presented. The effect of skin depth is treated explicitly. Theoretical predictions of coil sample resistance and frequency offset are compared with those observed experimentally in a variety of circular surface coils and sample conductivities.
