Copper-catalyzed C-S cross-coupling is known to form rare macrocyclic alkynyl sulfides. Computational studies now suggest a mechanism for the reaction pathway. Upon formation of Cu-S species, subsequent α-addition/elimination at the ethynylic carbon affords the desired macrocycle.
