The aims were to highlight the stresses on Rett's children, their siblings and their parents, and to give some thoughts on how these could be dealt with. The first lecture was concerned with the "beginning" in the Rett's child, the nine points of the parental first response, and problems that occur in childhood. Constructive, practical suggestions to help both the Rett's child during and after regression and the parents were offered. The second lecture dealt with views of siblings, common difficulties and stress factors experienced by families with a handicapped child, and suggestions for a greater degree of integration of the Rett's child within the family unit. The conclusion was that if the family allows the difference within it to be one that makes it more sympathetic and understanding towards the whole population, to make it work for it and not against it, then happiness will be found within the special family.
