Preoperative laboratory testing is commonly ordered prior to foot surgery. While this practice is justified when the preoperative history and physical examination offer pertinent findings, routine testing of overtly healthy patients is questionable. Available evidence of the utility of preoperative testing is reviewed and suggestions for establishing preoperative testing protocols for podiatric patients are made.
