Argon Laser photocoagulation was undertaken in 153 eyes of 112 patients with diabetic maculopathy. Morphological resolution of maculopathy was achieved in 88 per cent of cases. Exudative maculopathy responded well but had a high recurrence rate, whereas oedematous maculopathy had a moderate failure rate and few recurrences. Insulin or non-insulin dependency did not appear to influence the outcome. Poor visual results were found mainly in those eyes associated with poor initial acuity, failure of treatment or post-laser complications.
