The pursuit of biotechnology is to use living organisms to obtain particular products. Biotechnology, 'New Look', takes an essential step further in this pursuit:.....production is based on manipulating the genome: genototechnology! The production of monoclonal antibodies starts by fusing lymphocytes and myeloma cells. The lymphocytes bring in their programme in this process, and the myeloma cells (tumour cells) will ensure permanent mitotic activity. In recombinant DNA technology, 'foreign' DNA is incorporated into an existing genome so that the (bacterial) cell starts to produce products unfamiliar to this cell. An outstanding feature of biotechnology, 'New Look', consists in the fact that the instrumentation required frequently is biotechnological itself.
