Hydraulic fracturing is an important technology for the exploitation of unconventional oil or gas reservoirs. In order to increase the production of oil or gas, ultra-lightweight proppants with a high compressive strength are highly desirable in hydraulic fracture systems. In this work, a new type of ultra-lightweight proppant, poly(styrene--methyl methacrylate)/fly ash (poly(St--MMA)/FA) composites with a high compressive strength were prepared via in situ suspension polymerization. The Fourier transform infrared (IR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed that the poly(St--MMA)/FA composites were successfully prepared. The morphology analysis indicated that the composite microspheres show good sphericity, and FA powder was evenly dispersed in the matrix. The apparent density of the microspheres was between 1 and 1.3 g/cm, which is suitable for hydraulic fracturing. Furthermore, the compressive strength and thermostability were dramatically improved with the incorporation of FA, which could withstand high pressures and temperatures underground. The obtained poly(St--MMA)/FA composite microspheres are promising for application as an ultra-lightweight (ULW) proppant in oil or gas exploitation, which provides a new approach for the design of high performance proppants.
水力压裂是开采非常规油气藏的一项重要技术。为了提高油气产量,在水力压裂系统中非常需要具有高抗压强度的超轻质支撑剂。在这项工作中,通过原位悬浮聚合制备了一种新型的具有高抗压强度的超轻质支撑剂——聚(苯乙烯 - 甲基丙烯酸甲酯)/粉煤灰(聚(St - MMA)/FA)复合材料。傅里叶变换红外(IR)和X射线粉末衍射(XRD)分析证实成功制备了聚(St - MMA)/FA复合材料。形态分析表明复合微球具有良好的球形度,且粉煤灰粉末均匀分散在基体中。微球的表观密度在1至1.3 g/cm之间,适用于水力压裂。此外,加入粉煤灰后抗压强度和热稳定性显著提高,能够承受地下的高压和高温。所制备的聚(St - MMA)/FA复合微球有望作为超轻质(ULW)支撑剂应用于油气开采,为高性能支撑剂的设计提供了一种新方法。
