The authors describe four cases of arterial damage secondary to the use of the Fogarty balloon catheter. A review of the literature is presented and it is concluded that the number of complications after balloon catheter thrombectomy is generally underestimated. The associated morbidity remains high, but most of the complications may be prevented by appropriate use of the catheter.
