The history of carotid artery surgery is briefly reviewed. The introduction of cerebral angiography, coupled with increasing awareness of the extracranial location of offending lesions responsible for stroke syndromes, has resulted in the use of carotid endarterectomy as an important clinical therapeutic modality.
