Abstract

AIM

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Ceratonia siliqua on bone mineral density (BMD) as a non-pharmaceutical alternative treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty mature female Wistar rats were randomly separated into three groups of 10: Control, ovariectomized (OVX), and ovariectomized-plus-C. siliqua (OVX+CS). Total and proximal BMD were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in all groups before ovariectomy, and at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. At the end of the study, the femurs were subjected to a three-point bending test.

RESULTS

DEXA revealed no statistically significant difference in absolute values or percentage changes for total tibial BMD between OVX+CS and OVX groups throughout the study. In the proximal tibia, both absolute values and BMD percentage changes from baseline were higher in the OVX+CS group compared to the OVX group after 3 and 6 months of C. siliqua administration. Three-point bending test revealed a significantly higher thickness index in the OVX+CS group compared to the OVX group and a higher cross-sectional area index compared to the control group.

CONCLUSION

Long-term administration of C. siliqua may be considered a non-pharmaceutical alternative treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Further research is required to properly investigate the effects, and suitable treatment dose and schedule.

目的

本研究旨在探讨刺山柑对骨密度(BMD)的影响,作为绝经后骨质疏松症的非药物替代治疗方法。

材料与方法

30 只成熟雌性 Wistar 大鼠随机分为三组,每组 10 只:对照组、卵巢切除组(OVX)和卵巢切除加刺山柑组(OVX+CS)。在所有组中,在卵巢切除前、术后 3 个月和 6 个月通过双能 X 射线吸收法(DEXA)测量总骨密度和近骨密度。在研究结束时,对股骨进行三点弯曲试验。

结果

DEXA 显示,在整个研究过程中,OVX+CS 组和 OVX 组的胫骨总骨密度绝对值和百分比变化无统计学差异。在胫骨近端,与 OVX 组相比,OVX+CS 组在给予刺山柑 3 个月和 6 个月后,绝对数值和 BMD 百分比变化均更高。三点弯曲试验显示,OVX+CS 组的厚度指数明显高于 OVX 组,而与对照组相比,横截面积指数更高。

结论
