Indications for 'simple resection of the saphenofemoral junction' are rare. Apart from second operations following incomplete saphenectomies, they are limited to the fairly exceptional cases of ostial incompetence involving the saphenous axis. But any correct saphenectomy will include the resection of the sephenofemoral junction. This is practised where there is an open saphenofemoral junction, and in clear cases of incompetence in the saphenous axis. Apart from these classic indications, resection of the (long) saphenofemoral junction is carried out in cases of 'aesthetic saphenectomy', as it avoids scars disfiguring the thigh or leg.
