Current research on nitrogen fixation is basic to finding the knowledge needed for agriculture research in the future. Genetic engineering is the best approach to increase biological nitrogen fixation and recent developments hold promise for this technology. This concept employing atmospheric nitrogen fixation instead of fertilizer to grow food and feed crops, while a complex engineering task, is possible. The opportunities and difficulties are discussed.
