Cost recovery: the business of biomedical communications.

This article undertakes an exploration of the issue of mandated cost recovery for biocommunications units in state-supported university medical centers. A rationale for cost recovery and variables associated with cost recovery are examined. A list of the advantages and disadvantages for cost recovery is provided. Discussion centers on ability to and constraints in generating dollars in biocommunications units and possible long-range ramifications for the field.
