An analysis of 100 consecutive cases of carcinoma of the oesophagus seen at the Cecilia Makiwane Hospital over a 4-month period is presented in order to show how the disease is seen in Ciskei. The short period of survival, similar to that reported in other southern African series, is contrasted with the improved outlook for patients in China, another high-incidence area, since the introduction there of mass cytological screening which leads to early detection.
