Gradual morphologic and physiological changes in mucosa, bone and salivary glands in and about the oral cavity and pharynx bring about certain pathologic conditions occurring with greater frequency in the elderly than in the general population. The paper's intent is to summarize these changes and where possible provide some guidance in the management of the symptoms.
