Polyvalent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines are not 100 percent effective in preventing pneumococcal disease. In the case reported, pneumococcal meningitis and bacteremia developed about two years after the patient received the vaccine. When a patient presents with an illness that is consistent with pneumococcal infection, this etiology must be considered, regardless of the immunization history.
