Although advances in surgical skills and the technology of cardiopulmonary bypass have provided a considerable margin of safety for cardiac surgery, important complications may still occur. Successful management depends upon prompt recognition of the complication and then precise definition of the problem. Prompt specific therapy usually results in a successful outcome.
