Percutaneous pin fixation of 11 open comminuted severe fractures of the distal third of the forearm resulted in uneventful union and good function and radiological appearance. The lack of serious complications is attributed to the use of the external fixation device, which provides rigid fixation and allows wound redressings and early range of motion exercises without risking loss of alignment.
