Abstract

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate whether there was a difference in the muscular activity of the masticatory muscles between patients with skeletal Class II and skeletal Class I malocclusion.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted using a sample of 56 selected patients referred to the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Damascus, Damascus, Syria. An electromyographic device measured the myoelectric activity of the perioral muscles on patients in the two created groups: the skeletal Class I malocclusion group (n=28 patients) and the skeletal Class II malocclusion group (n=28 patients).

RESULTS

The study found a similarity in the muscular activity between the right and left sides within the same group, without significant differences between both sides for each muscle (P>0.05). The Class II group had significantly greater activity in the buccinator and digastric muscles than the Class I group (p<0.05). On the other hand, the Class I group had significantly greater activity in the orbicularis and mentalis muscles than the Class II group (P<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion and skeletal Class I showed differences in muscular activity. The buccinator and digastric muscles were more active in skeletal Class II patients, while orbicularis oris and mentalis were less active. The temporalis and masseter muscles showed similar activity in both groups.

本研究旨在调查骨骼型II类错颌畸形患者与骨骼型I类错颌畸形患者咀嚼肌的肌肉活动是否存在差异。

材料与方法

采用横断面研究,选取了叙利亚大马士革大学牙科学院正畸与正颌正畸科的56例患者作为样本。使用肌电图设备测量两个分组患者口周肌肉的肌电活动:骨骼型I类错颌畸形组(28例患者)和骨骼型II类错颌畸形组(28例患者)。

结果

研究发现同一组内左右两侧的肌肉活动相似,每块肌肉两侧之间无显著差异(P>0.05)。II类组的颊肌和二腹肌活动明显高于I类组(p<0.05)。另一方面,I类组的口轮匝肌和颏肌活动明显高于II类组(P<0.05)。

结论

骨骼型II类错颌畸形患者和骨骼型I类错颌畸形患者在肌肉活动方面存在差异。骨骼型II类患者的颊肌和二腹肌更活跃,而口轮匝肌和颏肌则不太活跃。两组的颞肌和咬肌活动相似。
