Perioperative care of the surgical neonate.

This article provides an overview of perinatal physiology and common pathophysiologic events that are likely to complicate the clinical course of neonates requiring surgical procedures. The special needs and problems of the premature newborn are emphasized. References are provided for a more detailed analysis of the normal and abnormal transition from fetus to newborn.
