Since antiquity, the large bony and fleshy tumors have been called sarcomas. It was not until after the development of cellular pathology during the middle of the 19th century that sarcomas were separated from carcinomas on the basis of their tissues of origin. This paper traces the growth of these ideas as well as the introduction of effective methods of treatment of the sarcomas.
