Transplantation of pancreatic microfragments in totally pancreatectomized pigs.

Total pancreatectomy was performed on 22 piglets. An intraportal transplantation of pancreatic microfragments was performed on 17 piglets, and 5 piglets were left as controls. After the transplantation, the mean intravenous glucose tolerance curve, K values, and the fasting plasma C-peptide values were normalized during the 1st month. Our results suggest that the method of transplantation of pancreatic microfragments is worth of further development to achieve a status independent of insulin in diabetics.
