Abstract

Public attitudes toward the mentally ill affect practices relating to treatment of mentally impaired persons. This has been true historically. The human rights movement and the community mental health movement have had a major impact on the care and treatment practices of the twentieth century. In the United States these movements have influenced Federal policy, which in turn has provided resources and a redirection that heralded a major expansion of public mental health services.
