Abstract

The viral metagenomics approach is an effective technique for investigating and analysing both existing and emerging viruses in humans and diverse animal samples. The ruddy shelduck, a nationally protected secondary key species of wild animals, has become the predominant species among overwintering waterbirds in Qinghai Lake. Viruses carried by ruddy shelducks can potentially infect humans or other animals; however, limited research on the faecal virome of ruddy shelducks is currently available. In the present study, faecal samples of ruddy shelducks collected from Saga County, Shigatse City, Tibet, China, were subjected to viral metagenomic analysis. The predominant viral families identified in ruddy shelduck samples were , , , , and . Among these, two picornavirus genomes have been identified as new strains of the genus in the family . In addition, viruses that infect parasites and bacteria have been identified and characterised. The present study enhances our comprehension of the composition of the viral community in ruddy shelducks faeces and highlights the dynamic nature of viral evolution and the significance of continuous monitoring to assess potential risks to wildlife and public health.

病毒宏基因组学方法是一种用于研究和分析人类及各种动物样本中现有和新出现病毒的有效技术。赤麻鸭是国家二级重点保护野生动物,已成为青海湖越冬水鸟中的优势物种。赤麻鸭携带的病毒有可能感染人类或其他动物;然而,目前关于赤麻鸭粪便病毒组的研究有限。在本研究中,对从中国西藏日喀则市萨嘎县采集的赤麻鸭粪便样本进行了病毒宏基因组分析。在赤麻鸭样本中鉴定出的主要病毒科为 、 、 、 和 。其中,两个小RNA病毒基因组已被鉴定为该科 属的新毒株。此外,还鉴定并表征了感染寄生虫和细菌的病毒。本研究增进了我们对赤麻鸭粪便中病毒群落组成的理解,并突出了病毒进化的动态性质以及持续监测对于评估对野生动物和公共卫生潜在风险的重要性。
