Abstract
The principles that guided the founding and development of the American Orthopsychiatric Association are proposed as a basis for addressing current issues in mental health and public policy. In the present era of privatization and commercialization of health care, it is incumbent upon mental health professionals to make use of the political process to reestablish health and mental health care as a national priority.
