A technique of expanding the thoracic cage diameter using a methyl methacrylate (acrylic) prosthesis is described and the subject of Jeune's asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy is reviewed. Children needing surgical treatment include those with a progressive deterioration of their respiratory status, an increase in respiratory infections, and failure to thrive. This surgical technique is recommended for its simplicity, short operating time, and effectiveness.
