The American College of Physicians believes that chemical dependence should receive increased recognition as a medical illness that requires medical diagnosis and treatment and greater educational attention. The College encourages physicians to help prevent, diagnose, and treat chemical dependence. Referral of patients to community resources, with appropriate support and patient counseling as well as patient and public education, are important components of this treatment.
